Master's Program: Requirements
The program
of study, approved by the director, must total at least 30 semester
credits at the graduate level; normally the program is completed
in two years.
Requirements
for Plan A and Plan B
1. HM 820: Humanistic
and Social Perspectives on Health. 3 credits.
Additional
Requirements for Plan A
1. A
minimum of 15 credits in a primary area of concentration.
2. A minimum of 6 credits in a secondary area of concentration,
in support of the thesis.
3. Four to 6 credits of HM 899: Master's Thesis Research
4. A final oral examination on the topic of the thesis
administered by a committee of three faculty members. The thesis must reflect
an integration of more than one disciplinary perspective, including
the perspective of the student's primary area of concentration.
Additional
Requirements for Plan B
1. A
minimum of 12 credits in a primary area of concentration.
2. A minimum of 8 credits in a secondary area of concentration.
3. One to 3 credits of HM 898: Master's Research
4. A research paper on a topic in the area of health and
humanities acceptable to a committee of two faculty members.
Areas of
Concentration
Each student must select a
primary area of concentration from among the following: philosophy of medicine
and bioethics; medical anthropology; medical sociology; social work; history of
medicine; literature and medicine; nursing; or epidemiology. Areas of concentration
are subject to change. Students may construct other areas of concentration
with the approval of the director of the Program in Bioethics, Humanities, and
Society.
